" While the incidence of child-battering is increasing in Malaysia, doctors are alarmed by the growing number of infants suffering from Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS), another form of child abuse which can cause blindness, brain damage or death.
In most cases, an angry parent or caregiver shakes the baby to punish or quieten the child. Such shaking usually takes place when the infant is crying inconsolably.
Jennet Fong Yen Phin, 34, a wealth planner who gives advice on money matters, has seen the worst happen to her nine-month-old daughter Lim Xin Yi when the babysitter shook the child because she would not wake up two months ago.
Xin Yi fell unconscious and was taken to Sungai Buloh Hospital where she was placed on a ventilator.
She developed seizures and a CT scan revealed an inch-long skull fracture and bleeding in the brain.
She is now blind in the right eye and while her left eye is responsive to light, it will likely be impaired.
She is also likely to be bed-ridden. "
